Cổ Loa citadel is the oldest earthen citadel in Vietnam, which is associated with many interesting legends about the god Kim Quy helping the King to destroy the spirit chicken and build the citadel, against the enemy. The Heritage Education program at Co Loa is the most visual history class to learn about national origin, historicals and characters, Archaeological vestiges from legend to reality.
At Cổ Loa relic, students were provided with information and learned many historical issues with diversity and new presentation methods:
- Learn about characters and events: King An Duong Vuong, General Cao Lo, Princess My Chau, god Kim Quy... in the context of Vietnamese history in Au Lac period; the event Ngo Quyen ascended the throne, chose Co Loa as the capital, and resumed the national unity.
- Learn about customs, beliefs, worship and organize festivals, legends about An Duong Vuong building Co Loa citadel, love story of Mỵ Châu – Trọng Thủy, story of the magic crossbow...
- Learn about the function, scale, architecture and construction art of the citadel.
- Learn about the architecture, fine art of temples and communal houses of the Lê, Nguyễn dynasties.
- Learn about the landscape and agricultural environment of a village in the North of Vietnam.
Learning through play is the most exciting, natural history approach for students. At Cổ Loa, students can "practice history" with many interesting but meaningful activities and games such as:
- Making a earthen model of Cổ Loa citadel.
- Casting ceramic artifacts from Au Lac period.
- Shooting crossbows to remember about Kim Quy God and magic crossbow
- Printing folk paiting to learn about history.
- Making “Oản” (sticky rice in jackfruit leaves) to remember about
- Making “Bỏng Chủ”, a kind of dry food of An Dương Vương
- Folk games.
Experiential activities at Co Loa stimulate interest in history subject, as well as arouse patriotism for students.
Heritage education with lessons and practical experiences in the field is always the best lesson to educate students more about traditional cultural and historical values, thereby contributing to fostering patriotism and national pride.
