On the morning of September 28, 2023 (ie the 14th day of the August Quý Mão lunar year), at Ngô Quyền temple (Cam Lâm village, Đường Lâm commune, Sơn Tây town), representatives of the leaders of the Thăng Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center, the Management Department of Cổ Loa Vestige Site offered incense to commemorate the 1,079th death anniversary of King Ngô Quyền (944-2023).
Offering incense to commemorate King Ngô Quyền
Ngô Quyền (898 – 944), was born in a powerful patriarchal family in Đường Lâm district, his father Ngô Mân worked as Châu mục (the Head of one of 9 divisions at that time), and his mother of Phạm family lived in the same district. Ngô Quyền had 4 sons: Ngô Xương Ngập (Thiên Sách Vương), Ngô Xương Văn (Nam Tấn Vương), Ngô Nam Hưng, and Ngô Càn Hưng (No one succeeded).
In winter of Mậu Tuất year (938) Ngô Quyền occupied Đại La citadel, killed Kiều Công Tiễn, and defeated the Southern Han invaders on Bạch Đằng River. In spring of Kỷ Hợi year (939), Ngô Quyền resigned the post of Tiết độ sứ ( jiedushi - a regional military governor in China), proclaimed the king, appointed Dương Thị as a queen, and located the Imperial City at Cổ Loa to continue building independence from the time of An Dương Vương with the desire to "reconnect the national lineage". After Ngô Quyền's death, temples to worship him were built in many localities. In Đường Lâm commune, people built both temple and mausoleum. Every year, on the 14th day of the eighth lunar month, people, local authorities and tourists gather in Đường Lâm to celebrate the death anniversary and offer incense to commemorate the merits of King Ngô Quyền.
For his cause of the national defense and construction, Ngô Quyền has been honored as "king of the kings", “Ancestor of the national Renaissance”, and the hero of national liberation.
