The scientific seminar: Ngo Quyen - the ancestor of the country’s renaissance

On the occasion of the 1010th anniversary of Thang Long - Hanoi, in the morning of October 1, 2020, at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, the People's Committee of Hanoi and the Vietnam Association of Historical Science organized a scientific seminar named "Ngo Quyen - the ancestor of the country's renaissance".

Attendees of the seminar were: Ms. Ngo Thi Thanh Hang - Member of the Party Central Committee, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, Mr. Nguyen Van Phong - Member of the Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee, Head of Hanoi Party Committee of Propaganda and Training Commission, Mr. Ngo Van Quy – Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Hanoi.

The seminar aimed to affirm the bibliographic sources related to Ngo Quyen in general and the period when Ngo Quyen settled and proclaimed himself King in Co Loa in particular; providing scientific bases for the Ngo Quyen Temple construction project at Co Loa Vestige Site and researching in building the scenario for the festival that represents Ngo Quyen set up new capital in Co Loa and proclaimed new throne. The festival will be held annually.

The seminar focused on two main topics: Ngo Quyen and the Ngo dynasty in Co Loa Capital; the renaissance career of Ngo Quyen - Heritage and issues of conservation and promotion of values. With more than 20 speeches, many analytical opinions, comments, scientists, heritage managers together clarified the historical context of Vietnam at the beginning of the 10th century, the background and the career of Ngo Quyen; the great significance of the victory at Bach Dang estuary in 938 which opened a long period of the country’s independence; the proclamation and settlement in Co Loa and Ngo Quyen's contributions to build up a completely independent administration.

At the seminar, Dr. Tran Viet Anh – Director of Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center gave a report on the orientation to build Ngo Quyen Temple in Co Loa Vestige Site, identifying the expected construction location with the architectural plan in harmony with the landscape and the surrounding monuments.

Speaking at the end of the seminar, Mr. Ngo Van Quy, Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee, emphasized that the results of the scientific seminar "Ngo Quyen - the ancestor of the country’s renaissance " were the scientific sources to confirm the position and role of Ngo Quyen and Ngo dynasty in the Vietnamese history, consolidating the scientific basis for the Ngo Quyen Temple construction project to pay homage to the renaissance ancestor of the Vietnamese people; build the script to hold an annual festival at Co Loa to commemorate the great merits of the National Hero.

Within the scope of the seminar "Ngo Quyen - the ancestor of the country’s renaissance ", Thang Long – Hanoi Heritage Conservation Center organized an exhibition of the same name. The exhibition was presented in the form of panels, introducing to the public about the background and career of the national hero Ngo Quyen with 3 main themes: Homeland and the family; Ngo Quyen - the ancestor of the country’s renaissance and Live forever with the country. This was also an opportunity to review the historical traditions, arousing pride in the nation's patriotism against foreign invaders for the today and future generations.

The exhibition would be held at the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long from October 1 to October 4, then moved to Co Loa Vestige Site (Co Loa Commune, Dong Anh District, Hanoi) until the end of November, 2020.
