Observance of name taboos

The old Vietnamese have a saying: "Nhập gia vấn húy", which means that when going to a stranger's house, you have to ask for his real name to avoid it. At a higher level, it is necessary to abstain from the name of king, the king's wife, the comtemporary king’s paternal and maternal ancestors. The pactice of avoiding real names is mainly to show respect. Thus, the Cổ Loa people abstain from real name of King Thục Phán, so they often say as Phớn or Phướn, or “The princess” instead of Mỵ Châu. Vĩnh Ngọc villagers would say “Nỏ” instead of Lỗ (General Cao Lo, inventor of the magic crossbow).
