Today's Dong Anh was officially established in September of the Year of the Bính Tý, of Tu Duc's reign (October 1876), including communes belonging to districts: Dong Ngan (Tu Son district), Kim Anh (Bac Ha district) of the North province. Ninh, Yen Lang (Tam Dai district, Son Tay province). These are ancient lands, formed along with the process of building the country from the time of the Hung kings. In the first year of Thanh Thai (year of Kỷ Tỵ, 1889), Dong Anh was renamed Dong Khe; then, on April 10, 1903, the Governor of Tonkin issued a decision to change it back to Dong Anh. On October 6, 1901, Governor General of Indochina signed a Decree on the establishment of Phu Lo province (Dong Anh became a district of Phu Lo province). In 1904, Phu Lo province was renamed Phuc Yen province.
After the August Revolution in 1945 was successful, Dong Anh belonged to Phuc Yen. On February 12, 1950, the Prime Minister issued Decree No. 03-TTg, merging the two provinces of Vinh Yen and Phuc Yen into Vinh Phuc province (Dong Anh became a district of Vinh Phuc province).
According to the Resolution of the Second National Assembly, the second session (April 20, 1961) on the expansion of the capital, Dong Anh district was moved to Hanoi. On May 31, 1961, the Government Council issued Decision No. 78-CP on the reorganization of administrative units of 4 urban areas and 4 suburban districts of Hanoi Capital. Accordingly, Dong Anh is a suburban district with 23 communes. In which 16 old communes of the District include: Anh Dũng; Bắc Hồng; Dân Chủ; Hùng Sơn; Liên Hiệp; Phúc Thịnh; Quyết Tâm; Nam Hồng; Tân Tiến; Toàn Thắng; Tự Do, Thành Công; Vạn Thắng; Việt Thắng; Việt Hùng and 7 newly merged communes include: Kim Chung; Tầm Xá; Dục Tú; Đông Hội; Liên Hà; Mai Lâm; Vân Hà.
On October 13, 1982, Dong Anh district had a new administrative unit, Dong Anh town, established under Decision 173/HDBT of the Council of Ministers (now the Government). The town consists of part of the land and population of the communes of Uy No, Viet Hung, Nguyen Khe, Tien Duong and Xuan Non.
