In the winter of 938, King Ngô Quyền defeated the Southern Han forces in the famous Bạch Đằng River battle. In the spring of 939, Ngô Quyền established a fully independent government, abolished the position of Jiedushi (Military Governor), proclaimed himself king, and established his capital at Cổ Loa. This historic act ended over a millennium of Chinese domination and inaugurated a long period of independence for the Vietnamese nation.
On the occasion of the 1086th anniversary of King Ngô Quyền’s ascension and the establishment of the capital at Cổ Loa, the Thăng Long – Hà Nội Heritage Conservation Center and the Management Board of the Cổ Loa Relic Site, in coordination with the People’s Committee of Đông Anh District, the Department of Culture, Science & Information of Đông Anh District, and the People’s Committee of Cổ Loa Commune, organized incense offering ceremonies in honor of King Ngô Quyền at the Đường Lâm Ancient Village Relic Site and Đền Thượng – Cổ Loa Relic Site.
