INFORMATINON ON THE CỔ LOA SPRING FESTIVAL – YEAR OF THE SNAKE 2025

The Cổ Loa Festival is part of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage and is a traditional festival typical of the Northern Delta, expressed through solemn and sacred ritual practices such as offerings, ceremonies, and processions conducted in a prescribed order.  The performances and folk games featured in the festival reflect the lively and distinctive artistic traditions of the ancient capital region.
The Cổ Loa Spring Festival of 2025 aims to honor and commemorate the merits of the ancestors, while also spreading local cultural values—contributing to the promotion of the image, culture, history, revolutionary tradition, and people of Cổ Loa.
Time: From February 2–3, 2025 (the 5th–6th days of the first lunar month, Year of the Snake).
Venue: Cổ Loa Special National Relic Site.
Festival program:
*February 2, 2025 (5th day of the first lunar month):
- 08:00–09:00: Opening of Cultural – Sports activities of the Cổ Loa Spring Festival 2025.
- 09:00–17:30:  
+ Organization of the traditional volleyball tournament and the traditional wrestling competition.
+ Folk games and experiential activities: Crossbow shooting at the Ngự Xạ Đài, ném còn (throwing cloth balls), monkey-bridge walking, etc., at the Experience Area; human chess and the đu tiên swing at the festival ground.
+ Water puppetry performances by the Đào Thục – Thụy Lâm troupe; quan họ singing and traditional classical opera (tuồng).
- 19:30–21:30: Professional or traditional art performances.
* February 3, 2025 (6th day of the first lunar month):
- 08:00–17:30:
+ Incense offering ritual.
+ Official opening of the Cổ Loa Spring Festival 2025.
+ Ritual ceremonies and offerings.
+ Procession of the palanquin of King An Dương Vương and the palanquin processions of the Eight Villages of Loa Thành: Cổ Loa, Văn Thượng, Mạch Tràng, Sằn Giã, Ngoại Sát, Đài Bi, Cầu Cả, Thư Cưu.
+ Continued performances of traditional arts: water puppetry, quan họ, and classical opera.
+ Continued sports competitions and folk games: traditional volleyball, traditional and freestyle wrestling, crossbow shooting, đu tiên, etc.
19:30–21:30: Professional or traditional art performances.
After the Cổ Loa Festival, visitors may attend the village festivals of the Eight Villages of Loa Thành, held as follows:
- Văn Thượng Village Festival: February 5, 2025 (8th day of the first lunar month).
- Ngoại Sát Village Festival: February 6, 2025 (9th day of the first lunar month).
- Mạch Tràng Village Festival: February 7, 2025 (10th day of the first lunar month).
- Cầu Cả Village Festival: February 8, 2025 (11th day of the first lunar month).
- Sằn Giã Village Festival: February 10, 2025 (13th day of the first lunar month).
- Thư Cưu Village Festival: February 13, 2025 (16th day of the first lunar month).
The Cổ Loa Festival embodies the historical values of the land, its people, their settlements, and the cultural knowledge of agricultural practices, spiritual beliefs, customs, traditions, and annual festive rituals of the Cổ Loa community. Each festival season offers the people of Cổ Loa and the Eight Villages an opportunity to recall the era of nation-building and resistance against foreign invaders, rekindling a sense of national pride.
