Ngo Quyen with a glorious victory defeated the Southern Han army in the famous Bach Dang battle in 938, ending more than 1000 years of Northern domination, opening a long period of independence of the Vietnamese nation. In the spring of 939, Ngo Quyen built a completely independent government, renounced the position of Tutor, proclaimed himself a King, set up the capital in Co Loa - the capital of the Au Lac state under An Duong Vuong.
