STORY ABOUT THE STATUE OF KING AN DUONG VUONG

Thuong Temple was built on a high ground located in the southwest of Noi Citadel, in Chua hamlet, Co Loa commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi city. The central figure in the Upper Temple is King An Duong Vuong. Legend has it that, in 1893, during a big renovation, a copper warehouse was discovered under the palace, so a statue of King An Duong Vuong was cast to worship.

The statue of King An Duong Vuong is made of bronze, carved larger than a real person in a round shape, in accordance with the standards for statue carving. The monolithic statue shows carefully the pedestal, hat, pants, shirt, and shoes. The statue is carved in a sitting position with a relaxed and majestic posture, square face, looking straight ahead, high forehead, slanted eyes, long straight nose, big ears, long and black beard, serious face, , wearing a Binh Thien hat decorated with two dragons and the sun, wearing a high-collared imperial robe with the frill extending down to the shoe. At the chest protector under the abdomen, there is the inscription: " Thánh tổ An Dương Vương hoàng đế" (“Saint An Duong Vuong emperor”), the large jade belt is low. Hands closed in front of chest, long fingers. Feet wear curved toe shoes engraved with blooming chrysanthemums.

In the spring of 1961, Ho Chi Minh visited the temple and the popular class at Thuong temple discovered that on the back of the king statue on the left was engraved the words " Tượng đồng nhị bách ngũ thập cân " (meaning: Bronze statue weighing 250kg). ta), to the right of " Đinh dậu niên ngũ nguyệt thập lục nhật tu tạo " (meaning: May 16, year of Dinh Dau (1897) – Lunar Calender cast the statue).
